Overview

This Fallout-style computer terminal was built for StAlkErS, an immersive post-apocalyptic airsoft LARP where story, objectives, and atmosphere matter more than trigger time. Previous events relied on a staffed laptop chat system to issue tasks and narrative beats. It worked, but it required an operator to sit behind a screen for an entire weekend. This terminal was designed to remove that bottleneck while increasing immersion rather than reducing it.

Inspired by the iconic Fallout terminal interface, the goal was not screen accuracy but interaction. Players approach the terminal physically, sit down, and engage using only a keyboard. No mouse, no shortcuts. Every action is deliberate and slow, which changes behaviour and creates tension. The terminal became a persistent in-world system rather than a background prop.

Behind the scenes, the project combined modern hardware with deliberately retro presentation. A 4:3 display, chunky keyboard, integrated audio, and a functioning floppy drive formed the physical interface. Software was built as a self-contained web application with CRT effects, sound design, and keyboard-only navigation. Physical floppy disks acted as keys that unlocked logs, audio recordings, decryptions, and hidden objectives.

During play, the terminal consistently drew queues of players. People stayed long after objectives were complete, reading logs, decoding messages, and even competing for high scores on embedded 8-bit games. It successfully bridged digital storytelling and physical exploration, turning a familiar Fallout fantasy into something players could actually sit down and use.
