G&G SMC-9: Monster or Pussy Cat?

G&G SMG-9

Another review and this time we’re looking at the G&G SMC-9 Gas Blowback Sub Machine Carbine.

Absolute CQB Monster

It is described on the website where I bought it from as the “Absolute CQB Monster”.  So, let’s find out if she’s a little monster or a pussy cat.

So what exactly is it?  Well it’s a G&G GTP-9 pistol lower frame inside a carbine kit which turns it into a cool little submachine gun. Or sub machine carbine so I say.

It comes in two options.  Firstly just the as kit without the lower half of the GTP-9 pistol or magazine for £199 or as a complete G&G SMG-9 carbine with the lower GTP-9 pre installed and ready to go for £249.  I got the ready to go SMG version.

To be clear the GTP-9  lower frame is used to make a SMC-9. You can not break down a SMC-9 to make a complete GTP-9 pistol. The slide and barrel are integral to the G&G SMG-9.

I got a free G&G baseball cap with my order which was a nice surprise.  I also got some etc mags a speedloader assist gadget – I’ll come onto those later.

On the back you can see the different mag options. Short extended and drum mags.  I am partial to a bit of drum mag action so I might look at getting one of those

In the box you get an instruction leaflet.  I would highly recommend that you read this.  I did the usual bloke thing and ignored it but it would have saved me time I had followed the quick set up guide whilst I was playing.

You get a larger pistol grip back strap. A speedloader, that actually works and doesn’t jam. A quick release sling mount. A cleaning rod. An extended 50rd green gas magazine. And finally the SMC-9 itself

Let’s get all this out the way and take a closer look

First impressions

First impression was really good.  The G&G SMG-9 is a sturdy 1.5 kilos. Really solid build. CNC alloy hand guard with MLok mounting and the rest of the body is mostly polymer.  Lovely feel to it

When you pull the charging handle back one of the two port covers flip open.  You can swap the port opening catch over to the near side if you prefer

The stock folds away with at the push of a button.  This makes it super easy to transport.  I wouldn’t run it with the stock folded as the port open always pops open when you fire it.

This is the fire selector. Push it in on the near side for full auto and the other side is semi

The mag release is Ambidextrous.  Release with your index finger or you thumb from either side.

Along with the two stage trigger safety, there’s also a secondary safety catch.  If you see the red dot on the safety – your ready to shoot.

The quick release pops into the hole on the handguard. You easily swap all the furniture around if you are left handed. The front mount doesn’t rotate but you can insert it at 180 or 90 degree positions. Your sling could attach to the front and rear sling mounts, but I’ll probably just use the rear mount myself.

The grip back strap can easier be swapped out depending on the size of your hands

The flip up iron sights are actually metal and not plastic like many guns have. Out of the box my rear sight was set way off to the left. The sight can be adjusts up/down at the front and left right at the rear.

The Breakdown

To remove the lower pistol frame pull the locking catch back behind the grip.  Paull the charging handle back and then lift up the catch just in front of the trigger. The lower slide will then slide back and off. This gives you access to the gas nozzle and internal.

To put the lower frame back on, it’s simply a reverse of how you took it off.

Let’s pop a little bit of green gas into the bottom of the magazine. The seal on mag is good and doesn’t need any work. They’re ready solid weighty mags.

To fire I have to remember it’s a pistol and not an SMG, so pull down on that slide release. The offside port cover will automatically flip up, hence why not to fire with the stock collapsed. You can also flip open the near side port cover

Loader Assist

I got an additional two magazine as a loader assist gadget.  These mags are the extended mag for the GTP-9 pistol.  This gives me 3 mags or 150 rds before I have to bomb up again.

This is the loader assist.  Now you can fanny around with getting the pulling down the magazine follower with your thumbnail to load the BB but as always, it’s fiddly.  There is no wider gap further down the follower, like on some pistol magazines.

So this little gadget which is made of plastic, but is so well made you could mistake it for CNCed metal.

It simply slides over the end of the magazine and pulls the follower all the way down. You could do probably do this with gloves on.  Then holding the magazine almost uptight simply pop the BBs in until full.  Simply as that and then slide the gadget off. All neat and hassle free.

Hop Up

On the bottom of the pistol grip there is a hop up adjustment key. I can see a risk of this falling out and being lost if your not careful.  This key is inserted into the end of the barrel which BTW has a standard 14 CCW flash hider.  For the hop, I’ll admit I’ve never seen one like this before. A video from G&G shows that it compressed a spring moving the hop onto the BB. Make sure you wear eye protection as I guess there’s a temptation to look down the barrel. Turn it anticlockwise to add hop and clockwise to remove hop.

Chrono

Onto the chrono. For consistency I tend to use 0.20 BBs at room temperature with green gas.

The average was 282 FPS. The highest was 301 and lowest was 282 – so that’s a 19 FPS variance. Most came out around 282 FPS.  The volume is about 93 decibels which is average.

On full auto it can spit out BBs at around 19 round per sec. Here’s the full auto in slow mo

One issue I had was when I used a bottle of ASG Blaster 0.20 BBs.  The SMC-0 chewed through them and they were munched in half. They were getting chewed in the firing chamber.  Swapping the BBs for another higher quality brand and they went through without an issue.  So avoid cheap BBs and I shouldn’t have this problem again.

For accuracy, I will have to wait until the current lockdown is lifted to give it a proper field test.

G&G SMG-9 Summary

Final thoughts.  Well, I fell in love with the G&G SMG-9 the moment I opened the box. Good gas blow backs are pricey and this one is at £250 compared to the Tokyo Marui M97 which is just under £300. I like the really solid build and the fact that all the furniture is completely configurable to your preference for both right and left handed users

If I was starting out in Airsoft, would I buy this pistol: hell yeah! She’s certainly a little monster and far from a pussy cat.

Score out of 10, and without a proper skirmish field test, it’s a conditional 9 out of 10.  If she performs like I expect her too, she’s be an awesome shooter.

I’ll soon be posting all the stats, the specs and the scores for all my reviews on the harrybadger.com website.

But in the meantime, make sure check out YouTube to see more honest review video of airsoft kit. Oh and don’t forget the blog!
